The importance of heat treatment

Electricite de France (EDF) reported that the key pieces of equipment for an unspecified number of nuclear reactors it operates are manufactured with deviations from technical standards. The manufacturer of these items is a subsidiary of Framatome.

During production, "deviations were made in terms of temperature ranges, more specifically, during the heat treatment of the welds of steam generators," the EDF said. This applies to both components already in operation and new ones that have not yet been installed at the facilities.

Stock prices fell 7% at the start of trading on Tuesday, which is the maximum decline in more than a year.

EDF operates over 70 nuclear reactors, including 58 in France, and is one of the largest nuclear power plant operators in the world. In addition, EDF owns shares in generating companies in many countries of Europe, in the USA, Brazil, Chile, Mexico, China, India, Morocco.
